Welcome to meal time – an educational and instructional situation where children learn!

Elephant-sunshine-solid.png

The Happy Learners team believes that establishing healthy eating routines in the Early Years, establishes good foundations for future health and well-being.

Our home – made meals are all cooked from scratch each day, in our new nursery kitchen, ready for our children to enjoy. We operate a 4 – week rotating menu, which allows our children to have variety, and their personal and collective ‘favourites,’ across a term. We strongly believe in the ‘hearty and healthy’ approach; children thriving off of delicious, sustaining foods that grow their bodies and minds – foods that they love and are excited to eat with their friends and Nursery teachers.

Our HEALTHY CHOICE GOLD AWARD

The Healthy Choice Gold Award is the highest level of award and is given to Early Years settings that meet both nutritional and sustainability standards.

Each of our recipes has been carefully considered for the age of children we cater for in terms of both nutrition and portion size, ensuring that our menus are well balanced for growing bodies. Mid – morning and afternoon snacks are provided and these are part of the overall balanced diet.

We do not add any salt or sugar to any of our food, and source as many organic ingredients as we can in order to promote healthy eating and to reduce the number of chemical additives digested. Our menus are varied, and we try to introduce the children to new tastes and textures as often as possible

Meet Jo Lenz, our highly skilled, Registered Dietitian who specialises in paediatrics. We work with Jo to ensure our menus are well balanced and go above and beyond EBSB nursery food guidelines. Jo obtained a first-class joint honours degree in Human Biology & Food Science & Nutrition and went on to study for a Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics in London. She has been a registered dietitian for the past 16 years, 13 of which I spent working for the NHS. Specialising in Paediatric Dietetics she has worked for NHS Trusts such as The Royal Free Foundation Trust Hospital in London, and the John Radcliffe Children’s Hospital in Oxford.
Jo is also part of Nichola Ludlam-Raine’s team at Mummy Nutrition, where she advises and provides consultancy. She is one of the expert dietitians for Bloss and was featured in Binky Felstead’s ‘The Making of You’. Jo is also a Mum to three girls and understands the difficulties of providing children with a healthy diet whilst juggling the pressures of a busy family life!
*** Alongside Jo, we are supported and advised by Laura Matthews, our Early Years Nutritionist, responsible for tasting and menu development at Happy Learners. Laura has a BSc (Hons) in Food and Nutrition & a MSc degree in Food Technology & Quality Assurance, so a career in food was always in her sights! Laura became a Registered Nutritionist in 2012, through the Association for Nutrition (AfN) which gives the public confidence that she’s an accredited nutritionist offering evidence-based advice. Laura worked for Jamie Oliver as Head of Nutrition for 10 years and was incremental in setting up & leading his nutrition team, building a nutrition strategy & implementing it across his core businesses, e.g. cookbooks, food retail & restaurants. Laura is now a self-employed Registered Nutritionist, having set up her own nutrition consultancy business in 2017. She works with early years nurseries & catering providers to improve the quality and nutritional status of food being served to children to support the efforts of parents. Laura’s mission is to arm those responsible for the food children eat, be that parents, education or food providers with the knowledge, inspiration & confidence to ensure every child gets the best nutritional start in life. Laura has 2 young boys, so understands well the challenges of feeding young children!
